⚠ The BPA-free label is not enough
A 2021 government study by Health Canada tested 20 baby bottle brands and 13 sippy cup brands — every single one still leached BPA and BPS into liquids despite being labeled BPA-free and despite Canada's ban. Bisphenol replacements (BPS, BPF, BPAF) are not uniformly regulated and may carry comparable risks. The label tells you one chemical was removed. It does not tell you what replaced it. Source: Siddique et al., Current Research in Food Science, 2021.
16.2M particles/L
Released by PP bottles at 70°C (standard sterilization temperature). At 95°C this rises to 55 million particles per liter. Even at room temperature: ~600,000 particles/L.
1,465–5,893 particles/L
Even PPSU and “safer” alternative-material bottles tested in 2024 still released thousands of microplastic particles per liter under normal use conditions.
100% of brands leached BPA
Every tested baby bottle brand released BPA and BPS despite being labeled BPA-free. Leaching was higher into milk and juice simulants than into plain water.

Shailee's Pick: Stainless over Glass
Glass eliminates plastic leaching but introduces a shattering risk — especially during the drop-and-rinse chaos of daily bottle washing. Stainless steel gives you zero plastic leaching and zero shattering. For everyday infant feeding, stainless is the more practical long-term choice.
“Feeding bottles are where I started because the evidence is the clearest. When I read the Nature Food study, I was still using a Dr. Brown's PP bottle. The number — 16 million particles per liter — made it impossible to unsee. I switched first to the glass version, thinking I had solved it. Then I dropped a bottle in the sink while rinsing it at 2am and shattered glass across the counter. That's when I made the full switch to stainless. Zero plastic in the food path, and nothing to shatter. That's the combination I wish I had found on day one.”

781–4,951 particles/L
Children's plastic cups release hundreds to thousands of microplastic particles per liter. Warmer liquids and scratched or older cups release significantly more.
All 13 brands tested: positive for BPA & BPS
Every sippy cup brand in the Health Canada study leached bisphenols into liquid — including milk and juice simulants — despite bans and BPA-free labeling.

“The Munchkin 360 was in every cupboard in our house. When I found the stainless version, it was genuinely a two-minute swap. Same cup, same lid mechanism my kids knew. Just no plastic touching their juice. Sometimes the swap is literally the same product — better material.”

50× safe limit exceeded
Melamine and formaldehyde migration from melamine-formaldehyde kitchenware (including “bamboo” plates) exceeds the Specific Migration Limit by at least 50× under hot acidic food conditions such as tomato sauce, fruit, or yogurt.
Most “bamboo” plates are melamine resin
Products marketed as natural, eco-friendly bamboo plates for children are typically 60–80% melamine-formaldehyde resin with bamboo or rice powder filler. FDA advises these should not be used in microwaves or with hot, acidic foods.

“The bamboo plate thing genuinely surprised me. I bought them because ‘bamboo’ sounded so much better than plastic. It took me a year to find out they were 70% melamine resin. The FDA page is right there, and it says clearly: do not microwave. Do not use with hot acidic foods. That is literally every toddler meal.”

Hundreds of particles per use
Plastic utensils shed hundreds of microplastic particles with each use, particularly when used with hot food, acidic foods (citrus, tomato), or when oil or salt is present, which increase particle release rates.
Dr. Nicholas Dragolea, London, cited in Delish report on disposable utensil microplastics, 2025.

4.22M microplastics & 2.11B nanoplastics/cm²
Microwaving PP baby food containers for just 3 minutes releases millions of microplastic and billions of nanoplastic particles per square centimeter. Released particles caused 76–77% death of human kidney cells in lab testing.
0.61–0.89 mg/day from storage bags alone
Six best-selling breast milk storage bags released 0.61–0.89 mg of microplastics per day when used as directed. PE, PET, and nylon-6 particles identified by Raman spectroscopy.

86% of tested bibs had PFAS
A Canadian government study tested 43 baby products including bibs. 86% contained at least one PFAS chemical. Four bibs contained PFOS, which is supposed to be strictly prohibited. Some bibs labeled BPA-free, lead-free, and PVC-free still tested positive for PFAS.

PVC bibs: 10–60% phthalate by weight
PVC requires phthalates to stay flexible — at concentrations of 10–60% by weight. These migrate from the material, especially when warmed by body heat or mouthed. Babies chew bibs. Babies chew the edges.

Note on silicone bibs: Look specifically for LFGB-certified platinum silicone. Standard food-grade silicone may release siloxane particles under heat and boiling (Xing et al., Nature Nanotechnology, 2022). The LFGB certification (stricter EU standard) is the safest choice.
